Banvaas (The Exile)

April 29, 2018 @ 7:00 pm

This is a musical play that essays the palace intrigue surrounding the ouster of the mythical prince Ram from the kingdom of Ayodhya in northern India, and his (and others’) reaction to the ensuing series of unfortunate events, ostensibly about three millennia ago. While the genesis of the idea was in preparations for last Diwali (Diwali celebrates the return of the prince to Ayodhya), and intended to bring forth the lesser known story of what led to Ram’s exile in the first place (along with his wife Sita and brother Lakshman), the play poses the question of relevance of the code of conduct prevalent in the Vedic era of Indian history – or at least exemplified by the characters in India’s great epic – to modern society.
