Open Your Eyes to a New World in Boxes & Walls

Mark your calendars, “Boxes & Walls” will take place in The Bluffs of UW-La Crosse’s Student Union for two days on Monday, March 25th – March 26th 2019.nBoxes & Walls is an interactive diversity museum tour created, built, performed, and facilitated by UWL students for anyone and everyone. Come experience in your face realistic presentations that provide an interactive intense means to learn about the differences.nThe Boxes & Walls student committee has been dedicated working since last semester racking their brains trying to create quality real-life situational diversity education with emotional reality. This program will have UWL students front and center teaching others in fun interactive meaningful ways. As for those who will tour Boxes & Walls three outcomes come to mind. First, it will make people think about how others are treated. Second, it will teach to respect the differences. Last, it will leave emotional footprints to become advocates for diversity. It’s an event that is free, open to everyone, and that no one should have to miss.nAnother unique characteristic in planning Boxes & Walls are the wide spectrum of UWL Recognized Student Organizations represented within the committee. This collaboration of co-sponsors are comprised of eight UWL student groups including the Asian Latinx, African Native American Womxn of Color (ALANA), Asian Student Organization (ASO), Black Student Unity (BSU), Diversity in Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (DiSTEM) , Hmong Organization Promoting Education (HOPE), Latin Student Association Organization (LASO), Native American Student Association (NASA) & the Pride Center. By the conclusion of Boxes & Walls, an estimated 65 students will have been involved serving as creators, builders, actors, facilitators, tour guides, and processors to increase diversity awareness, challenge one’s values, and bring to the surface unfamiliar, forgotten, and “hush hush” situations and issues. Understand that this is a very special diversity education program sponsored by students hitting so many touchy issues that it is FREE for all UWL students, faculty, staff and community members.nIn closing, the student’s incredible job arranging and presenting the Boxes & Walls diversity program at UWL is a unique experience for our La Crosse community. One staff member who toured Boxes & Walls years ago at UWL, said it best in saying that in their sixteen years working at the university level this single diversity event provided the most significant impact in addressing our shared concerns and helping to move our students forward. Boxes & Walls has unlocked some doors for our individuals to develop a deeper understanding and enduring alliances like nothing ever seen before.
