Each fall, the UWL Self-Sufficiency Program (SSP) invites the UWL campus and greater La Crosse area to the SSP Locally Grown Scholarship Breakfast. Together, we recognize SSP students and their achievements, their families and the community that encourage and support them. Whether you’ve attended Breakfasts in the past or plan to attend for the first time, we know you will find the stories inspiring and the breakfast delicious.
We extend a special invitation to former and current SSP students and their families. Children are always welcome!

Courage and Encouragement
Xia Yang
Speaker, 2025 SSP Breakfast
What does it take for parenting students to turn dreams into degrees? Xia’s response is profound and succinct, “It takes courage and encouragement for me to keep moving forward.” In the fall of 2016, Xia, then a mother of 6, completed SSP and was accepted into the School of Education at UW-La Crosse. As a student, Xia was recognized for her leadership and academic work. In December 2020, she earned her Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood/Middle Childhood Education. A dedicated teacher and life-long learner, Xia recently earned her Reading Licensure from Viterbo University. Xia Yang teaches first grade at Northside Elementary School in La Crosse.
